Another week, another underwhelming episode. This one was particularly dull – it’s not the worst leg design of this season, but it might have been the most boring episode thus far.

This was certainly an episode of ups and downs. I think the cast is saving this season from being a really lame one; our core group of teams is quite good, and turned a rather dull design for this leg into a decently interesting episode.

We’ve been through quite a few ups and downs with this season, haven’t we? I’ve seen quite a bit from all these teams, but soon our time with them will be over… what’s that you say? The season has only been on for four weeks? We still have half or more of the season to go???

It certainly doesn’t feel that way to me – perhaps it’s the fast-paced early eliminations, or just the fact that I’m used to watching at a much faster rate than this. Whatever the reason, it feels to me like I’ve been watching this one forever and it’s almost over, when there’s still plenty left. In any case, let’s dive into this week’s happenings…

Fair warning – I wasn’t a fan of this episode, and as a result this week’s coverage is going to be on the negative side, in particular the leg discussion. Apologies if this makes it less enjoyable, but unfortunately they can’t all be good legs…

The Amazing Race 33 Episode 1 Blog

Timing note: This post was published after I had watched the third episode of Season 33, but written in its entiretey before I started watching it.

Well, production certainly gave me a lot to work with and think about with our two-hour premiere. On the whole, I was pleasantly surprised and would say that it exceeded my expectations. This was a thoroughly enjoyable pair of episodes, and normally I would say that they bode well for the rest of the season. However, with the COVID shutdown rapidly approaching, it’s harder to be sure.

The Amazing Race 33: Preseason Impressions and Predictions

Here we are again, at the eve of another new season of The Amazing Race. At this point last season, I went on the record to predict that the coronavirus pandemic would be what finally killed the show, but that turned out not to be the case. CBS was willing to let it continue on, and TAR production was determined to not only start up filming, but to pick up where they left off as much as possible, and so they did. After the Season 32 finale, I predicted that Season 33’s filming would not resume in the year 2021, but they proved me wrong by several months, and so we’re getting a new season at the very beginning of 2022. In fact, despite the pandemic delays, and even though the gap between the end of Season 32 and the start of Season 33 is longer than any gap between any of the first 30 seasons, this hiatus is still shorter than the ones prior to the starts of the last two – 13 months compared to the 14 months for Season 31 and 16 months for Season 32.

There’s not a ton of information out about this season yet, especially the cast, but the unique circumstances of its filming alone promise an intriguing season, and one with high potential indeed. We’ll see if production is able to harness that potential and give us a strong season, or if the issues that have plagued the modern seasons will instead deflate this potential and give us a mediocre entry.
